Explore the fabulous castle of Montemor-o-Novo with this in-app audio tour! Walking along the ancient streets, you can easily pretend to be a medieval citizen living inside the castle walls. Pass by the Guardhouse, where the vigilant guards kept peace and prevented suspicious strangers from entering, and admire the Clock Tower that rises above the village like it did centuries ago. Then, see the secluded convent that now exists as a cultural center, and find all four medieval churches hidden here. You will learn the tragic story behind the name of the famous Ill-Fated Door. Farther on the way, you will cross the main square, which used to be the liveliest place before the 15th century and where nothing but ruins remains today. However, the Palace of the Alcaides stands high, and you will gaze at the place where the first sea expedition of Vasco da Gama was set. Once you reach the western end of the castle, you will discover another tower and door called Angel's. Slowly moving back to where we started, you will see the site of archeological excavations that provide us with valuable knowledge about how people used to live in the intramural village. For instance, you will find out how the clever citizens solved the problem of lack of water sources and discover the medieval piping system and wine cellars. Our walk ends at the old Synagogue after a complete circuit around the village. Embark on the journey back in time to the Middle Ages!
